Between 1940 and 1945, Auschwitz received over 1.3 million deportees. Tragically, approximately 1.1 million, primarily Jews, met their untimely demise within its confines.

The entrance of Auschwitz I bears the German phrase “Arbeit macht frei,” translated as “Work sets you free.” Crafted by prisoners, the sign holds a symbolic defiance, as they subtly inverted the letter ‘B’.

Attempting to break free from the horrors, over 800 prisoners dared to escape from Auschwitz. However, only 144 succeeded, while 327 were recaptured, and the fate of others remains unknown.

Dr. Josef Mengele, infamously known as the “Angel of Death” at the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, used to conduct medical experiments on prisoners, especially on twins and dwarfs.

We received an email the day before to say our times had been changed – booked 8am pick up, changed to 9:40am. Not a massive problem for us as we had nothing else planned that day. Bus guide was chatty and friendly – explained in great detail how the day would unfold. The tour guide was good. Shared details well. The overall experience is difficult to sum up as it’s such a tragic journey so you can’t say “I had a great time” I felt it was very busy and felt we could have had longer at points to take things in and ask questions but it was difficult as there were so many groups.

Booking was easy, the company did message me a few days before the trip to try and change the booking, but as it was only a short break I refused the change. A word of warning the pick up and drop off is as close to your hotel, not at your hotel so if you you have any mobility issues be warned. The mini bus was very well equipped and comfortable, the tours were both with the same guide who explained so so much. It was a very good tour and the length of the tour for both the camps with travel was around seven and a half hours pick up to drop off.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is an impressive site. I was amazed by knowing that all the beautiful art sculpted in salt was made by the workers in the mine. Visiting Auschwitz and Birkenau, guided by a knowledgeable person, was an unforgettable experience. Only being there to feel. Both tours could have been a better experience if the guide in the bus could use the travel time to tell us more about the places we were travelling through. His function was basically a “head counter”.
